What's it all about?
Each season, teams of 2 to 6 children work together around a new real-world theme. Guided by adult coaches, they explore scientific concepts, learn about engineering, and develop creative solutions. They build a LEGO model with motorized elements using LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential or WeDo 2.0, and create a Show Me Poster to present their learning journey.
It’s not about winning — it’s about growing. Teams proudly showcase their work at a local Explore Festival, where every child is celebrated.
The Engineering Design Process
Teams follow a simplified Engineering Design Process as they:
- Ask questions and explore the season’s challenge
- Imagine ideas and solutions
- Plan their model and poster
- Create and build Test & Improve
- Share their ideas at the Festival
This cyclical approach teaches kids how to think critically, solve problems, and embrace iteration — essential 21st-century skills.
The FIRST Core Values
At the heart of FIRST LEGO League Explore are six Core Values that guide all team activities:
- Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.
- Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
- Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.
- Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.
- Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.
- Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!
These values help children grow into compassionate, collaborative, and confident individuals.
